The Jackie Huggins Humanitarian Scholarship was officially announced last night at LaTrobe University’s 10th Iftar Dinner in Melbourne, where National Congress Co-Chair Dr Jackie Huggins AM was a keynote speaker.
The scholarship, jointly funded by the Islamic Council of Victoria and LaTrobe University, is for a refugee student to undertake tertiary education for three years at LaTrobe. It was named in Dr Huggins’ honour to recognise the work she has done in advancing human rights and reconciliation for over 30 years.
The official announcement comes after National Congress and the Islamic Council of Victoria signed a historic accord, recognising our organisations’ mutual commitment to the values contained in the United Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous People, and a multicultural and respectful Australia.
This year’s Iftar Dinner was held in partnership with the Islamic Council of Victoria. Held in Ramadan, it shares the traditions of Islam with a diverse group of people from different faiths and backgrounds.
