INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
Congress hosted a media forum to mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on Thursday 9 August.
This year’s theme was “Indigenous Media, Empowering Indigenous Voices”
The forum – held in Parliament House, Canberra – was broadcast live on 98.9fm Brisbane, online at 989fm.com.au and through participating stations on the National Indigenous Radio Service.
Congress Co-Chair Les Malezer was joined by media professionals Susan Moylan-Coombes, from NITV, Tiga Bayles, Chair, Australian Indigenous Communications Association, Amy McQuire from Tracker Magazine and journalist Jeff McMullen.
Each participant spoke on issues in their particular area and highlighted the importance of indigenous media in challenging stereotypes, forging identities and influencing the social and political agenda.
